Jordan Pathway Earns Silver Certification

Jordan High School’s Media and Communication pathway (JMAC) is the latest to earn Silver Certification from the Linked Learning Alliance.  The honor validates that key components of a specialized academic and career pathway are in place.

Following a Linked Learning Certification for JMAC back in 2013, the latest Silver honor reaffirms the continued development of the pathway, which focuses on digital art, video and stage technology, and TV production.

“We are so proud, and we want to let everyone know,” Jordan Pathway Coordinator Wendy Ili said.

Certification is based on a series of standards identified by leaders in the Linked Learning field.  Schools seek certification from the Linked Learning Alliance to validate the quality of their college and career pathways.  The pathways gain Silver certification when they establish the core components of Linked Learning, or Gold certification when they demonstrate advanced implementation of these components and equitable opportunities for all students.

Linked Learning pathways integrate rigorous academics with technical coursework that is relevant to the needs of local employers.  The pathways offer students work-based learning experiences aligned with their classes, and provide support services to help students graduate ready for entry into college and career.

The Long Beach Unified School District also has some of the first Gold certified pathways in the nation, including the Academy of Law and Justice at Cabrillo High School, and two pathways at McBride High School: the Engineering pathway and the Criminal Justice and Investigation pathway.  Three pathways at Cabrillo earned Silver designations in earlier months:  The Academy of Global Logistics (AGL), Cabrillo Engineering and Design (CED), and the Specialized Academy of Computer Media, Arts and Animation (SACMAA).

The Linked Learning Alliance is a statewide coalition of education, industry and community organizations.

“Having a certified pathway ensures equity for all students.  Therefore it is a goal of the district to have every pathway certified.  When we heard the charge, Jordan jumped on it,” Ili said, noting that other pathways at Jordan also are applying for the certification.  “Our pathways strive for excellence and providing equitable, rigorous programs infused with their industry theme.”

One example of JMAC's cross-curricular, industry-focused projects is when career and technical education classes teamed up with history teachers.  The history unit was America in the 1920s.

“The JMAC students researched the entertainment of the era and created silent films, which were stunning,” Ili said.
