Transitional Kindergarten is being provided as a response to 2010 legislation that changed the entry date for kindergarten from Dec. 2 to Sept. 1.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is an exciting educational opportunity for children born in the fall. Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a two-year program that provides children, with birthdays between September 2 and December 2, a curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate, taught by credentialed teachers. Parents have a choice to enroll their student in Transitional Kindergarten or wait the additional year when the student is age eligible to enroll in Kindergarten.

The youngest students in a kindergarten class risk struggling academically, emotionally, and/or socially. Transitional Kindergarten ensures that children have these pivotal skills, which are foundations to successful learning, when they begin kindergarten. Transitional Kindergarten bridges the path between preschool and kindergarten. These classrooms are located throughout the city and have a 25:1 teacher to student ratio. The classes are comprised primarily of students with fall birthdays.

Beginning in 2017-2018, LBUSD will offer Early Transitional Kindergarten (ETK) at select school sites located throughout the district.  Early Transitional Kindergarten is for students turning five years of age after the eligibility date for TK.  These students must turn five during the current school year.
